Characteristics of Effective Learning

The Characteristics of Effective Learning (CoEL) are key aspects of how children approach their learning and development. These characteristics focus on the process of learning, rather than just the content, and they help children build important skills that will benefit them throughout their education and life. For parents, understanding these characteristics can help you support your child’s growth both at school and at home.

The three main Characteristics of Effective Learning are:

  1. Playing and Exploring: This involves curiosity and engagement. Children learn best when they are actively exploring and experimenting with new ideas and experiences. Encouraging your child to be curious and take risks in their learning, whether through imaginative play or hands-on activities, helps them build confidence and problem-solving skills.

  2. Active Learning: This is about perseverance and motivation. Children thrive when they are challenged and engaged in tasks that require focus and effort. Supporting your child in developing resilience, such as encouraging them to keep trying even when faced with challenges, builds their determination and self-esteem.

  3. Creating and Thinking Critically: This characteristic involves using their imagination and thinking in new ways. Encouraging your child to ask questions, make decisions, and solve problems helps them become independent thinkers and decision-makers.

By nurturing these characteristics, you can help your child develop a love of learning, creativity, and resilience—skills that will set them up for success in both school and beyond.
